This course introduces the key public benefit programs available to caregivers and youth in Ohio, including cash assistance, food and nutrition supports, medical coverage, child care assistance, Social Security programs, Prevention, Retention and Contingency (PRC) services, and energy assistance. Learners will gain a foundational understanding of what each program provides, who may be eligible, and how families can access support. The course also highlights the vital role of OhioKAN Navigators and Benefit Coordinators in helping caregivers explore options, complete applications, and navigate complex systems.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
(1) Identify the major caregiver and youth benefit programs in Ohio and describe the purpose of each program.
(2) Explain basic eligibility considerations for each benefit, including income thresholds, household requirements, and documentation needs.
(3) Recognize how different benefits can work together to support family stability and meet immediate or ongoing needs.
(4) Describe the role of OhioKAN Navigators and Benefit Coordinators and understand how to connect caregivers to individualized benefits support.
(5) Support caregivers and community partners in identifying when a referral for benefits coordination may be helpful.
